Meet the new version of our payara. This pin is crafted after Hydrolycus armatus, the vampire fish of South America, famous for the two long fangs that rise from its lower jaw.
Payara hunt in the fresh waters of the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the rivers of Guyana. Those fangs aren't for show; the payara uses them to spear other fish. It's one of the strangest and most striking predators in the river, and one of our favourite species to bring to life in metal.
For Ver. 2 we redesigned it from the ground up. The body is warm brass-toned, with detailed scales and fins, now paired with a silver-toned jaw and gills and a dark inset eye. It's built as a sturdy safety pin, and the point closes right into the fish's open mouth, so the fangs become part of the clasp. Pin it to a jacket, bag, hat, or scarf and it becomes an instant conversation piece.
